These resources form Session 1 of the Edexcel GCSE (9-1) 19th Century Fiction Scheme of Work. They are designed to introduce the student to the unit, and focus on the skill of summarising. ***All extracts are the intellectual property of their author***

This scheme of work is designed to cover the various learning objectives linked to the new Edexcel GCSE English (9-1) curriculum for 19th Century Fiction. Contained in it are 12 lessons, each labeled with a skills focus and a theme, along with LO's and notes for each session. The Resources mentioned within the scheme are going to be added over the coming weeks, but R1 resources are aimed for students with a D grade, and R2 resources are aimed at students with E or below grades. The PREVENT opportunities sheet is created to support establishments in identifying links to the governments PREVENT agenda.

A PowerPoint, with built-in activities, introducing the idea of the purpose of picture stories and asking the students to turn a story into a picture version. Good practice of reading and interpretation skills, as well as developing students' understanding of the similarities between stories and pictures. A PowerPoint detailing numerous activities involved with planning a holiday. This task is originally designed for Functional Skills groups, or groups of intervention students who need support with basic tasks and following instructions. However, this is great for KS3 students, or groups who need a settling in or holiday task.

Two activities/puzzles for students of all ages and abilities. There is a Criss-Cross (or crossword) puzzle, which requires students to find answers to phrases about holidays. There are also two Cryptograms, both of which are phrases about the Summer which students are expected to decipher. Answers to all activities are included, and each can be made easier for LA students if necessary.

A set of two PowerPoints, Prompt and Revision Sheet used to help students plan, prepare and perform in a formal debate. These can be easily used or adapted for different questions and issues. The revision sheet is loosely based on an internet-found source.

The extract and questions are styled on the 2015 specimen papers from Edexcel, and are designed to push the students into considering phrasing and language use. The 'Using Context' activity is designed to test students ability to understand terms just through the sentence they have been used in. A series of PowerPoints, Activities and Information around the topic of HMS Titanic. All of the PowerPoints and activities are designed to encourage students to write about what it would have been like to be onboard, living at the time the Titanic was launched. These resources are great for diary writing and newspaper article writing, and can be easily adapted for different age and ability groups.

A PowerPoint and Activity designed to help students explore the story of 'Of Mice and Men' and what various characters say. These resources can be used by a variety of different age and ability groups, and would be excellent for students in KS3 who are learning the text as part of the new specifications for KS3 and 4.

A set of key skills cards designed to be a one-stop-shop for students preparing for the WJEC* GCSE English Language exam. Can be used separately as a revision prompt, or made into a booklet, which students can write notes in, alongside the rules and pointers. *This resource is easily adaptable for other exam boards, as many of the skills will be either the same, or similar.

An activity designed to support the revision of the poetry unit of the GCSE English exam. Add a quote into the middle of each of the box grids, and then ask the students to complete the tasks. You could change the quotes depending on the ability and skills of the students in your class, and the sheet can be used time and again to continually revise the different poems.

A task designed to develop students' ability to answer Section A of Paper 1 of GCSE English Language (for most UK exam boards). It focuses on delivering an extract and questions that highlight the author and how they have used language, structure and form in the text.
